After Reading: The Somnambulist

by Jonathan Barnes

The Somnambulist cover

On a night of roiling mists and long shadows, in a corner of the city where only the most foolhardy will deign to tread, a rather disreputable actor meets his end in a most bizarre and terrible fashion. Baffled, the police turn once again in the direction of Edward Moon—who will always welcome such assignments as an escape from ennui. And, in fact, he leads the officers to a murderer rather quickly. Perhaps too quickly. For these are strange, strange times in England, with the strangest of sorts prowling London's dank underbelly: sinister circus performers, freakishly deformed prostitutes, sadistic grown killers in schoolboy attire, a human fly, a man who lives backwards. And nothing is precisely as it seems.

Which should be no surprise to Moon, whose life and livelihood consists entirely of the illusionary, the unexpected, the seemingly impossible. Yet what is to follow will shatter his increasingly tenuous grasp on reality—as death follows death follows death in the dastardly pursuit of poetry, freedom, utopia . . . and Love, Love, Love, and Love.

This was a most excellent read. I didn't like the ending much, and would have loved to learn more about the character the book was titled after, but overall, a most interesting read. I really loved the world Barnes set up here, with all it's intriguing eccentricities. It wandered into magical realism in places, which was a fun jaunt, and I particularly loved the with the narrator (not to give too much away, I hope!). The ending was rather odd and I didn't like it much, but overall the book was an interesting read and really well written!

After Reading: Branded: Fall of Angels

by Keary Taylor

Jessica's had the nightmares for as long as she can remember.  Nightmares of being judged for people who have died, of being branded by the angels.  Her friends and family think she's a crazy because of it all.  Yet she carries the mark of the condemned, seared into the back of her neck, and hides it and herself away from the world.

But when two men she can't ignore enter her life everything changes, including the nightmares.  The two of them couldn't be more different.  She will do anything to be with one of them.  Even tell him the truth about angels, why she never sleeps, and the scar on the back of her neck.  But one of the two has set events into motion what will puller her toward her own judgment and turn her into the object of her greatest fear.

I am sooo far behind on catching up with my reviews! I'm going to try and post a few today, but we'll see how far I get. It's been a super-busy couple of weeks (and a lot of it actually rather good!), so I can't complain, but wow, busy!

Anyhow, this was a good read. A much more polished and better written self-published book than the few that I've read lately. I was happy to see that, really, as I was kind of dismayed by a few of the books in that they were so lacking in polish. Not that there weren't a few rough edges here, but still, much better. I rather enjoyed the story, too, and found it to be a nice light read, with an interesting premise. I plan on checking out the second book in the series, Forsaken, when I get a chance.

Saturday Six

  1. Wow. Ever get to the end of a week and wonder how on earth your survived it? That's how I'm feeling right about now. It's been one of THOSE weeks. And I am sooo ready for the long weekend :)
  2. It rained so much yesterday that all the worms were strewn about the sidewalk this morning. I haven't noticed that since I was a little kid and had to resist the urge to go put them all back into the grass.
  3. The universe is still holding off on the Karma. I think it may be time to start sacrificing chickens. Or, ya know, Easter bunnies.
  4. I have started making little decorated scrabble-tile necklaces. They are most cute. I'm going to post some pics once I can figure out how to take ones that don't suck (ie, not with my camera phone, as that results in rather blurry images--go figure).
  5. I WILL write this weekend. I mean it. I will find some time to sit down and pull out a few thousand words. Somehow. In between the massive pile of grading that is currently taunting me.
  6. I can't wait for this book:
(Pretty, right? And I adored the first one!)

Okay, that's my randomness for the day. I shall now return to cleaning my apartment.Or something like that.

A minor request of the universe

Anyone else out there really just praying this next week is a little heavier on the positive side and less on the "if one more thing goes wrong today I'm going to go back to bed" side? Because I really am :) So, here's a little wish sent out for all of us: let this week be better. Let something good happen, even if it's small, and hold off on the bad stuff for a while. Because, let's be honest, I'm seriously in need of just a little positive. A small bread-crumb of good when everything else has managed to fall into utter stress-filled panic and insanity.

Please. Pretty please. With sugar on top?

It's really not too much to ask! Really, I'm not asking for an agent, or a job, or some miracle that suddenly my husband wants to cook dinner every night. (Not that I wouldn't mind any of the above, but I would even be happy with my students doing well on their midterm and being happy for once, or finding out that someone can help me in the lab, or I don't know, that my query letter doesn't suck... :)

After Reading: The Darkangel

By Meredith Ann Pierce

The Darkangel, a vampire of astounding beauty and youth, can only summon his full power when he finds his 14th and final bride. But for Aeriel, whom he kidnaps to serve his brides, there is something about him--something beyond his obvious evil--that makes her want to save him rather than destroy him. The Darkangel--Pierce's first book, originally released in 1982--was an ALA Best Book for Young Adults, a New York Times Notable Children's Book, a Parent's Choice Award Superbook, and a Booklist Best Book of the Decade.

That is a seriously lousy description, but I can't find anything better. But, you get the idea. The tale itself has been around for a while, but what got me to pick it up was the blurb by L'Engle :) It was a fast read, and really quite interesting. I was a bit confused for the first half with some of the rather odd details about the world, but they finally fit into place. On the whole, it was an intriguing fantasy. There are two sequels, which I will have to check out when I get some time!
