Kate and the flowerbeds. Her desire to excavate them is a whole other story :) |
A few good things to do while walking:
- Stick to paths where dogs are allowed. They're usually marked, and for good reason :)
- Keep your dog on-leash if they're going to stray from your side. I don't know how many times
Kate, guarding the front yard. - Let the dogs sniff butts. So long as they're being friendly, why not let the dogs have a moment or two to "meet"? I always feel a little sad when an owner pulls their dog away before Kate can meet-&-greet. She needs that interaction.
- Keep the leash short. Just because it can extend for twelve feet doesn't mean it needs to. Sometimes that leads to more problems, not the least of which is getting tied in a knot by a little rat terrier (*ahem* Kate).
- Always, always, always bring supplies to pick up after your pet. No one likes stepping in dog-do. Nor the smell of it. So do everyone a favor and pick it up.
A few other things that you may want to avoid:
- Not picking up after your pet. Redundant? Yep. And for a good reason. It's smelly, gross, and
Kate, the day I adopted her from
the Sacramento SPCA. - Forgetting that you're the one in charge, not the dog :) Sometimes I see big dogs hauling their petite owners down the sidewalk, which may be hard to help, but for the most part it's in a dog's nature to obey it's pack leader. Overall, this leads to a happier dog owner and pet.
- Unhappy dogs? Go around. Sometimes Kate acts like a totally unsociable pain around other dogs. She'll growl and act like she's going to get aggressive, often for no reason I can see. I am always so embarrassed! But when this happens, I keep that short leash close and give the other dogs space, and really hope that next time they meet they'll find more common ground.
These are a few of the things I think about while out with Kate. There are definitely more. I'd love for you to chime in with any ideas on what you do while walking your dog, or when you encounter dogs while walking?
And do check out Rover: their dog walking and boarding services are great! Definitely a good resources for helping out dog owners.
She sounds like a lovely dog. We've got four, and most of the time I walk them alone, so I stay on my toes as when we meet other dogs our two littlest ones can scrap with each other! Nothing serious, but not a good vibe for the other dog. Luckily we have plenty of countryside around here so there's a lot of space!
ReplyDeleteI don't have a dog, but would like one in the future. Now I know what to expect.
ReplyDeleteSad fact: I have not walked my dog since my son was born...four years ago! She gets plenty of yard time, but that's it. Though G recently discovered her leash and wanted to know what it was for. Maybe we could go for a walk around the block sometime-- except it's now like in the 90's and super humid all the time, ugh.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to second that 'keep your dog on a leash' suggestion. So many times on walks with my dogs, unleashed dogs come after us, and it's frightening for both my and my dogs. My little dog (well, she's 60 pounds, but she's little compared to my other dog) views it as a threat, regardless of the other dog's intentions. Whenever we walk around our neighborhood now, I have to make sure to do it when I know those neighbors who are allergic to leashes are at work.
ReplyDeleteKate sounds like a very sweet pup—So glad you two found each other!
Yup, people who don't keep their dogs on leash are asking for trouble. Dogs will be dogs, their animals and their instincts can take over in a flash. I'm glad Kate has found her forever home you have gained a companion.
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! I do detest folks that don't clean up after their dogs. I've told my son we can't get a dog until he says he will clean up poop. He isn't ready for that yet!
ReplyDeleteKate is a sweetie!
ReplyDeleteYour Kate sounds sweet and well trained. Thanks for the advice and tips.
ReplyDeleteI wish more people would pay attention to the "pick up after your dogs" rule. When we lived in a neighborhood with sidewalks and small front yards, people would let their dogs poop in our front yard all the time. SO annoying!
