After Reading: Lots of books (and a Giveaway!)

It's back to normal blogging here at Write Stuff, thank heavens! I feel like it's been ages. Okay, maybe not actually *normal* because occasionally I'll share things like this: a giveaway on facebook & here :) Want to enter? Tell me in the comments the name of the author whose short story gave me the idea for Colors Like Memory's title (google makes this way too easy). Extra entries for sharing this link, or the contest post on facebook (leave me an note that you did this so I can find it, okay?).

Prize: a copy of CLM. Already have a copy? Another ebook of your choice. It's open until Saturday :)

Okay, so I've been reading lots of books during my release time and haven't had a chance to share them here yet. Here's my lowdown:

The undead can really screw up your senior year ...
Marrying a vampire definitely doesn’t fit into Jessica Packwood’s senior year “get-a-life” plan. But then a bizarre (and incredibly hot) new exchange student named Lucius Vladescu shows up, claiming that Jessica is a Romanian vampire princess by birth—and he’s her long-lost fiancĂ©. Armed with newfound confidence and a copy of Growing Up Undead: A Teen Vampire’s Guide to Dating, Health, and Emotions, Jessica makes a dramatic transition from average American teenager to glam European vampire princess. But when a devious cheerleader sets her sights on Lucius, Jess finds herself fighting to win back her wayward prince, stop a global vampire war—and save Lucius’s soul from eternal destruction. (Goodreads)

This was a lot of fun to read, and I flat out adored the first 3/4th of the book. Jessica was funny, totally identifiable, and I found the whole premise pretty amusing. (Plus, anthropologist mother=win!) My only quibble was the ending when they (*spoiler alert*) end up in Romania. Things kind of fell apart for me then, with no grounding in the characters, setting, or events. It all felt kind of strange and I wish the book had wrapped up in the US. Anyhow, it was fun though, and I'll definitely be picking up the next book!

Sixteen-year old Desolation Black wants nothing more than to stay in Hell where it’s cold and lonely and totally predictable. Instead, she’s sent back to Earth where she must face the evil she despises and the good she always feared.
When Desi is forced to embrace her inner demon, she assumes her choice has been made—that she has no hope of being anything other than what her father, Lucifer, has created her to be. What she doesn’t count on, is finding a reason to change—something she’s never had before—a friend. (Goodreads)

I won a copy of this ages ago and have been meaning to read it forever. I'm glad I finally managed to! I loved the originality of the events in this story--the devil having a daughter, the descriptions of heaven & hell, everything. I found Desi interesting and engaging. The only thing was I had a hard time connecting with the writing. I don't know if it was me or what, but I just couldn't get pulled into the story as easily as I normally do. I mean, when I normally sit down to read, it takes me all of a sentence or two to get swallowed by the tale. This took a lot longer. Don't have a clue why, but it left me wanting...

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette's touch is fatal. As long as she doesn't hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don't fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.
The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war-- and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she's exactly what they need right now. (Goodreads)

OH WOW DID I LOVE THIS! (Okay, caps are actually necessary here!) Juliette's spot-on, and with everything that's happened to her, I really felt the fine line of sanity she's walking on (with what she'd been through, it's a freaking miracle she's not nuts!). I loved that her internal dialogue belied her fear, weaknesses, everything, but on the outside she was tough as nails. And Adam--can I haz him? Please? Can't wait for the next book!

Okay, who has read these? Thoughts? And don't forget to enter my giveaway :)

Sunday is for Photos (x16)

Hi! It's back to my normal blogging routine now, but just as a reminder, my blog giveaway ($25 giftcard--who doesn't like that?) is still ongoing for one more day. All you need to do is go to this post, and follow the links to the awesome blogs who have hosted me during the past couple of weeks. Leaving a comment on any of the blogs earns you an entry. Super simple, right?

Okay, so back to some pics! This past week, my brother graduated from the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. It was a very big event, with the whole fam-damily getting together to celebrate. Lots of fun was had, and we're all very proud of my little brother. He's always (since he was like 6) wanted to fly jets (I think we may have let him see Top Gun at a tender age??), and he's well on his way to achieving that goal. Anyhow, here are some of the fun pics I snapped while in Colorado:

The President spoke at his graduation. How cool is that? It was an interesting talk, and even if you don't particularly care for Obama, he's a fantastic speaker. And, hey, who gets to see the President?? (The security to get in was amazeballs. Snipers included!)

The graduates tossing their hats at being Dismissed for the last time. The jets roared over the stadium right as they threw them up. Very cool!
The airshow for the graduation was spectacular. Well, it is the Air Force, so I guess it's expected :)

Don't you just love zoom lenses?

I love that you can see the pilots in this shot. Also, totally reminds me of Top Gun, haha!
I had to throw this one in here--me with my brother & sister. We make a cute bunch, dontcha think?
Anyone else attending graduations this time of year?

-On Sophia The Writer's blog, I'm talking about my writing journey (so far!).

The Book Blast is still ongoing, so if you want to enter that, go here :)

Thanks a million times over to the awesome bloggers who have made this tour possible! I can't even begin to tell you how much I appreciate it!!!

Colors Like Memories Blog Tour: day 13

Wow, has it been a whirlwind couple of days! My brother graduated from the Air Force Academy (so proud of him!) and the Book Blast has kept me hopping to keep track of all my new followers (*waves to new followers* I hope you'll join us in some fun here!). My blog tour is winding down a bit--just two more days!

Today I am visiting over on Barbara Ehrentreu's blog, talking about a topic that is central to Colors Like Memories: teen suicide. It's a tough issue, with some staggering statistics, but I've posted some of the best ways to help deal with this issue. Check it out, leave a comment for an entry in my giveaway, and if you get a chance, check out Barbara's book If I Could Be Like Jennifer Taylor!

Also, another review of CLM has popped by up, written by Rebecca Ryals Russell: "The YA book I just finished reading and found amazingly well-written, well-crafted and couldn’t wait to finish was Colors Like Memories by Meradeth Houston.  She took the idea of guardian angels and created a fascinating, plausible world and culture around which to weave a story of loss, grief, love and recovery." Just as a reminder, Colors Like Memories is currently $1.99 over on Amazon, for those who are interested! It's a limited time thing, as in, just a day or so, so if you're thinking of checking out my book (and you won't regret it!), go grab yourself a copy :)

Sunday is for Photos (x15) and other fun things

I don't know if I've shared this photo on here before, but today it feels really appropriate. This is the road heading into Monument Valley, which I took last summer while on a long road trip with my hubby. Something about the road heading off into those awesome peaks reminds me a lot of my life right now. Things are stretched out before me, some of them are taking shape, but a lot is still in the mist. Adjusting to being a real professor (not just a grad student professor), my writing, marketing, and all things book related, it's all there, I just need to travel the road and get to work. It's a little daunting at times. Okay, maybe a little more than daunting.... Anyone else ever feel like this?

Couple of other quick things: Colors Like Memories was put on sale for the next couple of days on Amazon, so it's $1.99 for a limited time. Great time to pick it up, because I know it won't be this cheap for a looong while! Also, if you do purchase, share a tweet that you did--it would be much appreciated :)

Also, Tanya Reimer nominated me for the Kreativ Blogger award! I'll do the associated fun stuff with this after the blog tour, but pop on over to her blog if you get a chance--it's a fun one! Thanks so much Tanya!!!

Colors Like Memories Blog Tour: Day 9

It's the weekend! I don't know why this makes me so ridiculously happy, but it does. It's the little things in life, right? And this has been one whirlwind of a week. CLM has been out for over a week, is now chillin' on Amazon, and my blog tour is going strong. Next week will be the last of my official tour, and I have LOADS planned. Other things that have happened this week? I was offered and accepted a job--like a real, adult job! I will be starting as a professor at the University of Montana, Missoula (I find it hilarious that spell-check constantly tells me I'm not spelling that right). Much excitement has been had about this :)

And today, I have some super fun to add to the mix: I'm talking about Why I Write on Michell's blog. Do go check it out, leave a comment, and show Michelle some love. While you're at it, you can still visit some of the other posts from the last week and leave a comment there, too, for extra entries in my $25 gift card giveaway. All the posts are listed here!

A small favor, while I'm talking here: for those that have read CLM already (Thank You!), would you mind taking a second to post a review on Goodreads or Amazon? Good, bad, otherwise, but I'd love to have some quotes to use for promotion. Thanks!!

Colors Like Memories Blog Tour: Day 8

Hi everyone! How is this fine Friday treating you all? Anyone have some fun plans for this weekend?

Last night I finally got to go see Hunger Games, now that I'm back state-side. Loved it! Maybe it's because it's been a while since I read the books so the details weren't quite so clear, not that it matters, but it was a a lot of fun!

Today's posts are both pretty fun :)

-Over on Mark Koopman's blog, I'm talking a little about world building. While you're there, you really must read through his story from this past week. It. Is. So. Funny! A dad taking 3 boys to Victoria's Secret? Seriously, read it too!

-I also have a teaser post with an excerpt from CLM on The Daily Harrell. If you want to read the first little bit of Colors Like Memories, check it out!

Leaving comments on both sites earns you 2 entries into my giveaway, too!

Colors Like Memories Blog Tour: Day 7

Okay, show of hands (or comments) time: who here is addicted to Pinterest? Really, I can't be the only one! I love that site. Seriously. And I waste lots and lots of time there. So, in that vein, today on the lovely Lynda's blog, I'm talking about using Pinterest as a social media outlet. It is one of the fastest growing social media sites. Curious? Stop by and check it out, and don't forget to leave a comment!

To prove how much I enjoy Pinterest (you can find all my pin boards here), I'll admit that I totally made these bracelets last night:
I am doing this--looks so easy, and results are super cute!
Cute, right? If I get a second, I'll post a pic of what mine looked like :)

Colors Like Memories Blog Tour: Day 6

It is a red-letter day everyone!!! (Okay, I am going to have to go google why they call it a red-letter day--anyone know??) Anyhow, my book is now on Amazon! For some reason this makes the whole "I'm an author" thing seem really, well, REAL. But, yes, you should go check it out there. Obviously, if you need CLM in a format other than kindle, you'll need to go to my publisher (Barnes & Nobel=slow), but if you have a kindle, you're in luck!!

The blog tour is making THREE stops today. Woot! So do go check them out, leave comments, and I'll give you a little hint: one of them is giving away an extra copy of CLM, above and beyond the $25 gift card I'm offering to commenters. So, you've got that going for you (bonus if you can name the film!).

Here's where I'm haunting today:

-Lady Gwen is hosting a fun post about the actors I'd cast for the roles in CLM, should hades ever freeze over and it be made into a movie :) (Also, she has a new writerly blog, which you should totally go check out!)

-Katie has one of the more interesting posts I wrote for the tour: fridge poetry! You really need to see this--it was a hoot to write!

-And Reading & Writing Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance has a guest post up about writing nooks. Because we all dream of having cute little writing spots, don't we? (I'm not the only one, right?)

Wow, I'm reading this and thinking it must really, really sound like I've had my caffeine this morning. The scary part is I haven't! Eep!

Colors Like Memories Blog Tour: Day 5

How is everyone doing this fine morning? I have another fun post for you to enjoy today! On The View from Fairview, I'm talking about sources of inspiration. Go forth, leave a comment, and enjoy Fairview's blog, because it's a great one!

And, hey, does anyone out there have any advice for using Goodreads? I've been on there for ages, but I still feel like I'm not getting much out of it, other than recording the books I've read :) What do you do that you enjoy on the site?

Colors Like Memories Blog Tour: Day 4

Happy Monday everyone! I hope everyone had a nice weekend, and enjoyed celebrating Mother's Day. I was happy to be home and able to see my mom and grandmother yesterday for some classic Houston feasting and reading magazines by my grandparent's pool :) How did you celebrate?

The blog tour rolls on today! Today I am over on Christie's Book Reviews, talking about my favorite times I'd like to visit in the past. It's a fun little post and Christie's blog is great, so do go check it out! Remember, all comments are eligible for that giftcard giveaway!

Looking for Colors Like Memories? It's available from my publisher here!

Sunday Photo for the Mom's

Today is Mother's Day, and because I'm home I don't have any fun trip shots to share (sad!!). But I did want to share a pic of my mom and me from this last winter. We're on a hike in the Sierra's in the middle of winter, having a very nice time. It's kind of a dorky shot of the two of us, but I wanted to do a little shout-out to my mom today :)

What are your mother's day plans? Do you do anything to celebrate? We're having a giant lunch later on of fried chicken and gravy, and sitting by the pool (there is something really strange about pairing bathing suites and greasy food!). I can't wait to work on my tan and read in the sun for a while!

The Blog Tour will resume tomorrow! I hope you have a wonderful Mother's Day!

Colors Like Memories Blog Tour: Day 3

So my book is officially on sale. It's a pretty trippy thing to realize that people I don't know are able to read it (and also, people I do know--for some reason, this might even be stranger, though I don't know why). Anyhow, it was quite an awesome experience to have people tell me yesterday that they purchased my book. Very, very cool. Also cool? My blog tour! I am loving all the fun comments people are leaving, and getting to wander around to different parts of the web. Today, I have two posts, an interview and a guest post, both of which are lots of fun!

-Over on Miranda Hardy's blog, I'm talking about what comes first when a story idea hits.
&
-Daisy Carter is also interviewing me--she has some really fresh questions, too!

Stop on by, see what's up, and leave a comment there to earn a chance at winning a gift card!

While you all go do that, I'll be running the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure with my mom and sister. Well, considering how out of shape I am, I'm not sure I'll be *running* it, but I will be participating and enjoying the swarm of pink, along with the amusing team names.

Colors Like Memories Blog Tour: Day 2

THE DAY IS HERE!!! (why, yes, I am excited, can you tell?) My book is officially on sale. Yay! Anyhow, I only have one link to share where you can buy my book in any ebook format (because Amazon is slow...). Anyhow, please, if you're looking to check out Colors Like Memories, go here and check it out! I will post the other links just as soon as I get them.

Also, because my blog tour is continuing, Rachel Morgan has a fun interview up over on her site today! The first few paragraphs are posted as a nice little teaser to whet your appetite for why you should go, ya know, buy my book :) Seriously, go check out Rachel's awesome blog, and while you're at it, her Creepy Hollow series is fabulous! Don't forget to drop a comment and gain an entry into my $25 giftcard giveaway. All details for this are posted in the main tour post (easily accessible with the link on the sidebar).

And, just in case you are wondering what CLM is about:

Julia is a Sary, the soul of a child who died before taking her first breath. Without this 'breath of life,' she and others like her must help those on the verge of suicide. It's a job Julia enjoyed, until the accident that claimed her boyfriend’s life—an accident she knows was her fault. If living with the guilt weren't enough, she's now assigned to help a girl dealing with the loss of her mother, something Julia is not exactly the best role model for. If she can't figure out a way to help her, Julia will lose her position in the Sary, something she swore to her boyfriend would never happen.

Now, I'm going to go get a pedicure, go shopping with my mom & sister, and have a nice girls day to celebrate :) And check my email on my phone obsessively.

Colors Like Memories Blog Tour: Day 1

Tomorrow, people, TOMORROW, Colors Like Memories goes on sale!!! I am both incredibly excited, and so freaked out I totally can't sleep (okay, this might have something to do with being completely jet-lagged, but I'm going to stick with the excited/scared explanation). Anyhow, I'm super excited to kick things off today with TWO awesome blog entries for you to enjoy:

-Charlie Volnek (my cover artist) is interviewing me.

&

-I'm visiting Jessica's blog to talk a little about winged beings in different cultures.

Stop by either of these places to drop a comment and gain an entry into my $25 giftcard giveaway! All details for this are posted in the main tour post (easily accessible with the link on the sidebar).

After Reading: Night Sky

By Jolene Perry

After losing Sarah, the friend he’s loved, to some other guy, Jameson meets Sky. Her Native American roots, fluid movements, and need for brutal honesty become addictive fast. This is good. Jameson needs distraction – his dad leaves for another woman, his mom’s walking around like a zombie, and Sarah’s new boyfriend can’t keep his hands off of her.

As he spends time with Sky and learns about her village, her totems, and her friends with drums - she's way more than distraction. Jameson's falling for her fast.

But Sky’s need for honestly somehow doesn’t extend to her life story – and Jameson just may need more than his new girl to keep him distracted from the disaster of his senior year.

I was happy to be able to host another one of Tribute Book's fabulous titles, and I'm incredibly happy to be able to talk about Night Sky here today. I really, really loved this one. It's so refreshing to read from a guy's point of view, especially one that is so distinct and fun as Jameson. Honestly, by the end, I was totally crushing on the guy. Sure, he has his flaws, but he's a good person, a good guy, and has his head screwed on tighter than a lot of guys that age (or any age, really, haha!). Sky was an intriguing and interesting character in and of herself, and the dynamic between the two felt authentic and exciting. Emphasis on the exciting. Wow, steamy scenes :) Haha, loved it! Honestly, go check this one out!!

Giveaway Winners!

Thank you to everyone who entered my giveaway! I loved everyone's answers--they were so unique and fun! If I had to chose a particular event/person to go back and see, I have to say I've always wanted to meet and speak with Gregor Mendel. You know, the guy with the pea plants :) Yes, I am a genetics lab nerd, but he has always struck me as a really interesting person, and I would love to sit down and tell him all the amazing things we have learned from his pioneering research on until today. I think he'd get a kick out of it!

Okay, okay, I know you're all just here to see who won, right? Well a big, huge congrats to:

REBECCA RYALS RUSSELL who won the copy of City of Lost Souls or giftcard

After Reading: Die For Me

By Amy Plum

In the City of Lights, two star-crossed lovers battle a fate that is destined to tear them apart again and again for eternity.

When Kate Mercier's parents die in a tragic car accident, she leaves her life--and memories--behind to live with her grandparents in Paris. For Kate, the only way to survive her pain is escaping into the world of books and Parisian art. Until she meets Vincent.

Mysterious, charming, and devastatingly handsome, Vincent threatens to melt the ice around Kate's guarded heart with just his smile. As she begins to fall in love with Vincent, Kate discovers that he's a revenant--an undead being whose fate forces him to sacrifice himself over and over again to save the lives of others. Vincent and those like him are bound in a centuries-old war against a group of evil revenants who exist only to murder and betray. Kate soon realizes that if she follows her heart, she may never be safe again.

I just finished reading this on my loooong flight from Tokyo to Vancouver and I had to post about it. Why? Because if you like this book, you will totally love Colors Like Memories :) No, they are not totally similar, but they definitely have some similar elements (people saving humans, immortality, love stories, star-crossed lovers, you know, that kind of fun stuff). Anyhow, needless to say, I rather liked reading this. I liked Kate's thoughts, her strength, and her dealing with some really horrible things that happened to her. I think her reactions were really true-to-life (especially with the death of her parents), and I liked that. My only quibble was it took too long to get to the action and introduction of the bad guy. I liked the build-up and never felt like the story was lacking for not having the nemesis present, but once he showed up I was left going "um, he should have been here from the start!" At any rate, a fun read, and I'm looking forward to grabbing the sequel soon!

Has anyone else read this one?

Also, just a few hours left to go on my GIVEAWAY! Go enter if you get a second :)

Sunday if for Photos x14 (I think)

This has been one of those weeks where I am still not sure if this is really MY life. Okay, I know it's my life (duh) but it's been really good, in a kind of pinch-me sort of way :) I do hope I'm not boring you all with my pictures, but if I am, well, go enter my contest instead! Easy to enter, and fun prizes to be had!

A good friend of ours, who studies traditional kimono, invited us over to her house and showed us how to dress in kimono. Holy moley is it an involved process! She then dressed me up in one of her kimono. This is me with her, and her mom (who plied us with sweets from her family's sweet shop downstairs--sooo good!), getting dressed.

The two of us all dressed up! This shrine is on the lake and so pretty. The coolest part about this day, and the one I feel so utterly blessed by, is that they gave me this kimono. I am so grateful I don't even know where to begin! It's beautiful, and I look forward to displaying it at home.

This is the bamboo forest in Kyoto. Very cool to explore.

Close-up of the bamboo.

The river valley near the bamboo forest. We took a steam-engine train ride up this valley, which offered some spectacular views!

Tokyo at night, as viewed from the Tokyo Tower. Can you see Mt. Fugi in the distance?

Super moon! Not quite full yet, but still pretty!

These koy are hung in honor of the boy's festival that was this week. There have been schools of them everywhere. I may have taken a lot of photos...

Do you know this dog? Bonus to you if you do!

Dorky pic of me with all our luggage about to board the shinkansen from Kyoto to Tokyo. 4 bags, too many gifts, and I am still not sure how we've managed to survive this trip!

Hope you enjoyed! :)

One Week Until Colors Like Memories Enters The World!

*Gulp* One week people. One. I'll admit, I'm really trying to keep the freaking out to a minimum. The blog tour is set up. The posts have been written. Galleys have finally been sent out. And I soooo don't feel prepared. I attempt to be frank on this blog, so I'll share that I can't quite shake the worry that everyone is going to hate my book. I am probably not too abnormal thinking this, but it still haunts me! Deep breath. I'll be fine. Really. You should just ignore all that and go enter my giveaway! Super simple to enter, and lots of ways to earn extra entries!

Giveaway: City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare or a Gift Certificate!

Guess who finally got her galleys? ME! Woot! And because I'm a seriously happy author right now, I think it's time to do another giveaway here. Sound good to you? Because Colors Like Memories is coming out on May 11th, I thought it might be fun to get some thoughts on history. Julia, the main character, has lived for a long time and seen some pretty crazy stuff. I love writing scenes set in the past because I'm always imagining what it would be like to live in certain eras and places (this might have something to do with why I became an archaeologist and spend a lot of time studying ancient populations...). Anyhow, the question for you all today is: what historical figure or event do you most wish you could go back and see? I'll be posting my answer later in the week :)

Would you want to see the pyramids being built? Paul Revere's ride? Meet Einstein? The possibilities are endless! Let me know in the comments!

Of course, the real question is, what can you WIN? Well, here's what I'm thinking: THE CITY OF LOST SOULS is coming out on May 8th. This contest ends the 9th. I will use 2-day shipping for those in the US and have this much anticipated book in your hands very soon. Living internationally? I'll get you an e-copy even faster :). Now, some of you may have never gotten into The Mortal Instruments series (in which case, this should be remedied post haste), but I do understand. I'll happily donate a $10 Amazon or Barnes & Nobel giftcard to this person to use on a purchase of their choice.

Annnd, because I am celebrating my book, I will also be giving the main winner an e-copy of my book, along with one additional winner. Sound good?

In sum:
-2 winners
-City of Lost Souls (or $10 giftcard) + Colors Like Memories for 1 lucky person
-Colors Like Memories for another lucky person
-Open internationally for e-books only
-Dates: 5/3/12 until 5/9/12
-Answer the question: what historical person or even would you most like to go back and see?

Easy, yes? If you have any questions, sing out in the comments! Rafflecopter is offering many, many ways to win this!

After Reading: Spellsinger

by Alan Dead Foster

In a world of sentient animals and humans, the hardheaded (and hard-shelled) wizard Clothahump searches across the dimensions for another kind of wizard to help defeat the looming threat posed by the armies of the Plated Folk. What he gets is Jonathan-Thomas Meriweather, part-time would-be rock guitarist and janitor, who finds that with the use of a unique instrument called a duar, he can perform magic by playing and choosing from his well-worn repertoire of rock. Trouble is, while the lyrics he sings may be righteous, the magic they spawn is all too often something else.

You know, this is one of those cases where the blurb doesn't really give an accurate picture of the book. That's fine, really, but reading it on goodreads I was like "wait, was that what I read??". Anyhow, I haven't read any adult books in a while and was thinking I should probably do something about that. I picked this one up thinking it sounded kind of interesting, and it was pretty fun. Not exactly riveting, though. I enjoy high fantasy from time to time, but this didn't quite hit the mark. The talking animals kept making me think of picture books, haha! Also, things never really went anywhere. Like, the main character wandered all over, gathered a crew, and arrived at the city, but the impending invasion by the enemy wasn't even close to happening. Strange, but I like my books with a little more action :) Anyhow, it was well written, and entertaining at points, but I'll be returning to YA with pleasure!

Interview with Kathleen Allen, Author of LORE of FEI

I'm very happy to bring to you today a fello MuseItUp author, Kathleen S. Allen, author of the awesome-sounding LORE of FEI books! Released April 27th, you can find the book here

Ariela is a mutant faerie, born without wings. No wings means she has no magic. Her faerie parents hide her deformity from the humans in Hege, especially from Kel, the Warlord of Kel’s Lair. But, when rumors of a human child living in Fei reach his ears he sends his warriors in to rescue her. In one horrific night her faerie parents are murdered and she is brought to Kel’s Lair to live. It is there she learns the truth about her parentage. The Veil of Enclosure that separates Fei from the human world is dissolving allowing the humans to enter Fei and kidnap the faerie children in order to enslave them and take away their magic by clipping their wings. In the faerie Book of Lore is a legend that a silver-winged faerie will be born to save Fei but no such faerie has been born. The Faerie Council asks Ariela to free the faerie children and restore the Veil before it’s too late. But, Ariela has no magic, or does she?

(Q) Thanks for stopping by my blog! Let’s start with the basics: where are you from? Is there any place online you’d like to direct us to learn more about you?

I am from Michigan but I’ve lived on both US coasts.

Here is my online presence:

On Twitter: @kathleea
Website: www.gaelicfairie.webs.com

(Q) I always love hearing about how the idea for a particular book came about. Please fill us in on how you got the idea for LORE OF FEI.

I got the idea when I wrote my first two faerie books, AINE and FAERIE FOLK. I actually wanted to write a longer faerie novel for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month-30 days and nights of literary abandon). NaNoWriMo is the competition where you write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days during the month of November. I had an idea, what if a faerie was born without wings? What kind of a faerie would she be? Would she be shunned by her faerie race? What if the land of the faeries was just over the border of the land of the humans? I mean, haven’t you thought you could see a faerie if you just went down the right path in the forest? What would the humans think about the faeries? Would they be accepting or not so much? What if the wingless faerie fell in love with a faerie with wings? Would she be allowed to? What about humans and faeries, can they fall in love? As you can see, I did a lot of thinking about this book before I wrote it.

(Q) Which authors have most influenced your own writing?

Anne McCaffery is the top of the list. I’m a big science fiction/fantasy fan and have been reading it since I could pick up a book (I began to read at the age of three). I am a speed reader and I plow through books quickly. I also like to read Young Adult books, JK Rowling, Veronica Roth, Suzanne Collins, Cassandra Clare, to name a few. Oh, I also like Dave Duncan.

(Q) What do you do for fun other than writing?

Writing is my “fun” thing. When I am not writing I like to watch movies and BBC on TV. I love Masterpiece Mystery on PBS and my guilty pleasures are The Voice, American Idol and Castle on TV. I also like to listen to music on my iPhone and read, but not at the same time.

(Q) If you could describe your ideal writing spot, where would it be? What music would you listen to (if at all)? What treats would you have on hand?

My ideal writing spot is somewhere overlooking the ocean. I love nature. To look at. Not to be out in. LOL.
I tend not to listen to music when I am writing but I do have a playlist to get me in the mood to write. I listen to a variety of music, classical, jazz, rock, folk.
My treats are almonds, Omega Trek mix from Trader Joe’s, and Jolly Rancher gummies. I can’t do chocolate because I’m allergic. (Ack, allergic to chocolate! I'd die!)

(Q) Plotter or pantser? Both? Neither?

I’m more of a pantser as a rule but with a fantasy novel you have to plot it out because you are world building. I tend to write it all out and then go back and fill in plot holes etc. I typically do five edits. The first edit is timeline and plot issues, the second edit is character issues (does the description of each character match), the third edit is a read aloud (I use Natural Reader to have the computer read the novel aloud to me as I follow along), the fourth edit is more a line edit fixing any grammar/punctuation/spelling issues, the fifth edit is a final look-see of the entire book. And this is all before an editor sees it. (I am so going to go check out this Natural Reader you mention--sounds perfect!)

(Q) Do you have any new projects that you are working on? Care to share?

Yes, I am working on Book 2 of the LORE OF FEI series. This one is called WAR OF FEI. The third book in the series is VEIL OF FEI and as soon as I finish the edits on book 2, I’ll start on that one.
I am querying four novels to agents/publishers right now. A YA Dystopian, a YA zombie book, A YA historical fiction and an older YA space opera/paranormal fantasy. I have a YA historical fiction that is brewing in the back of my mind I will work on after Lore of Fei, book 3 is done.

(Q) What kinds of marketing do you think are the most successful in terms of getting your name/book out there? (Curious minds are taking notes!)

Having a social media presence has helped me a lot, but I’ve also made lots of writer friends on Twitter/Facebook and they are helping me to get the word out about my books. Writing a good story helps! If you do all you can to promote but your writing isn’t up to par, a reader may read one book but not others. That’s why it’s important to make each book the best it can be with a great cover, editing and editing again. It’s also important to not just promote your books online, no one likes spam. Have conversations with other writers, find out what they like to do. Connect with blogs like this one!

(Q) If you'd like to add anything, please do so.

I hope to be able to do a giveaway on Goodreads. I will let you know.

(Q) How about an excerpt to tantalize the readers?
LORE OF FEI Excerpt:
“I am not a human girl, Duri. I am a faerie, like you. I was born without wings.” His eyes widened, but he still did not speak. “The Old Ones sent me to find a way to stop the humans. There can be no war on Fei. I need to know what the humans plan and when they will raid Fei again. You can help save Fei from extinction, Duri. Will you help me and be loyal to me and to Fei?”
He nodded. It was a slight nod, but it was a nod.
“Thank you Duri.” I sensed relief from him. “Sunvi, of the Old Ones has been captured and is ensconced in the food area. His wings have been clipped, too. He will help us restore Fei to the land it once was.”
I moved away from Duri toward the dragons. Tashie spotted me and flew over. She gave me a look, and I laughed at her. I sensed hunger from her. I reached in my pouch and pulled a sweet out. She took it and gobbled it down. I scratched under her chin, feeling the happiness flowing from her into me. I looked over to where Duri had stood, but he had gone back to the Lair. I hoped I could trust him. Faeries were much harder to read than humans.

Thanks so much for joining us here today, Kathleen! Best of luck with your awesome book!
