So, I about had a heart attack this morning. In looking over my stats from my website (which, btw, I took down ages ago, but it's still randomly being hosted for free at this point...), I realized someone had spent a LOT of time looking it over. Low and behold, they were coming from one of the places I've applied to work. Um. Crap. I mean, I've tried to keep my two "lives" pretty separate--I will direct people from here to my other grad school blog, but in general I don't go the other way. Why? Because academic people seem to generally think everyone should be a one-horse person. As in, academics should be IT. Nothing else should matter. Clearly, I don't subscribe to this, nor will I ever. My research is a big and important part of my life, but it is not IT. I have other hobbies and things I enjoy doing. Like writing and attempting to get myself published (which is a whole lot harder for fiction than it ever is for my research, where I have my name on a lot of papers, etc.). Anyhow, I'm still pretty sick about it. I hope whomever it was realized that it's important to have a life beyond their office and lab. At least it is for me. Does it change anything about my ability to be an awesome professor and researcher? Heck no! I am a great teacher (if I may say so myself), and my record of work speaks for itself. So, if you stumble upon this blog while looking for information about me for a job--(please pick me!) please remember that I am a well-rounded person :)
