What would you do or where would you go if you could traverse a wormhole through space or time just once? One safe round trip passage. Would you go back in time and talk some sense into a younger you? Go five years into the future and bring back the Wall Street Journal? See just how the heck the Great Pyramids of Giza were really built? View what the other side of the universe looks like? Kill Hitler?
Because I'm an anthropologist and work with mostly all people who study the past (yeah, there are plenty of cultural anthropologists around, but they like history too), this is one of those questions that gets thrown around a lot. Just what would you DO if you could? The future does appeal to me a lot, because I'd love to see what I end up doing with my life :) But, really, I'm probably end up going back because there are so many mysteries I'd love to figure out. Would I try to figure out if there was a migration into the desert Southwest from Mexico, like I studied for my dissertation? (Answer: um, probably not.)
No, really, I'd probably like to spend a day or two with Gregor Mendel and talk to him about genetics. I'd love to sit down and tell him that his theories and concepts will change the world. Also, I'd love to drop a copy of Mendel's work on Darwin's desk--would it have taken 40 years to re-discover Mendel if Darwin had found his work? Where would we be if there hadn't been that oversight?
I'm fairly certain this wins me some sort of major-nerd award, but I think it would be a great way to spend a trip to the past!
What about you? Where/when would you go?
(What would a time-travel post be without some Doctor references?)

Hi there- new follower! I love your answer! Meeting historical figures would be amazing! my bloghop entry: morgankatz505.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteThanks! Headed to check out your post now!
DeleteMeeting famous people from the past would be so cool. I would opt for Einstein. Thanks for participating.
ReplyDeleteEinstein would be awesome to meet too!
DeleteDavid Tennant as Doctor Who - LOVE!
ReplyDeleteJust had to say that :-)
Totally, 100% agree! (Though Matt Smith has definitely grown on me!)
DeleteYep, I'm with you. David will always be my favorite, but I've come to like Matt too. Can't wait for the new season to start on BBC America :-)
DeleteI came very close to saying I would go back and get on the HMS Beagle with Darwin for this blog hop. The Age of Discovery would have been a fascinating time to live for someone with an adventurous spirit. :)
ReplyDeleteThe Age of Discovery would be awesome! I'd love to spend some time chatting with Darwin too.
DeleteYes you may win that award, but still it's a nice thought to meet someone whose theories are the basis for so much of our progresses today.
ReplyDeleteTotally! At least, that was my thinking :)
DeleteDarwin would definitely be an interesting person to hold a conversation with.
ReplyDeleteHe definitely would! Lots to talk about with both these guys :)
DeleteYou left the best at the end! true, Doctor Who is great! BIG fan here!
ReplyDeleteMe too! Yay! I've watched the whole last few seasons in the last couple of months and I'd beyond addicted :)
DeleteThere is a bit of nerd in all of us, yours is just special!
ReplyDeletewww.sandysanderellasmusings.blogspot.com
lol, thanks! I think :)
DeleteNot only meet him, but drop a copy of his work on Darwin's desk - oh, that's good. I'd like to be a fly on the wall for that one:)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this would be awesome! :)
DeleteWhat MJ said ;)
ReplyDeletelol, ditto!
DeleteLove the humor. :) Great idea. So many possibilities...
ReplyDeleteThanks! There really are so many possibilities when you think about it!
DeleteIt would be the future for me. What's past (or in the past) is to be studied, but I don't like the idea of paradox (if that exists).
ReplyDeleteI'd be very worried about paradoxes, but isn't that the fun of this? :) No consequences!
DeleteLots of innovative thinkers from the past would make for ideal destinations for a wormhole trip. Wouldn't it be neat to go to a great big dinner party where they'd ALL be in attendance? If I could only pick one, though, it'd have to be Einstein.
ReplyDeleteThat would make for an epic dinner party! It would have to be several days long at least though, so I could speak with everyone!
DeleteI also chose to go back in time.
ReplyDeleteA conversation with Darwin?! That would be something else....
lol, definitely something else. Interesting doesn't being to cover it :)
DeleteA conversation with Darwin or Mendel sounds like a lot of fun. :)

I think so! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteThe past would be pretty interesting, but I'd be too worried about messing something up. Of course, just by being there, I might have messed something up, so it's a crapshoot either way :)
ReplyDeleteThere's always that Butterfly Effect to worry about, but I'm just going to pretend there aren't those consequences in this one :)
DeleteInteresting choice. There are so many intriguing figures in the past. It would be great to meet them and pick their brains through a wormhole.
ReplyDeleteThere really are quite a few--it would be hard to pick!
DeleteI have been loving reading what people would do with this hop question. I loved your choice- how fun! I would have a hard time deciding if I should go to the past or travel to the future!
ReplyDelete~Jess
That's a really hard choice! I've been loving to see everyone's picks, too!
DeleteNerdy is cool!!
ReplyDeleteI guess for an anthropologist it would be really difficult to decide where to go and what to do if given ONE single chance, 'cause there are just so many unknowns you could find answers for.
Exactly! There are just too many things I wish I could "solve" for us :)
DeleteThat's an easy one. I've already been there for years inside my nofel, The Unhewn Stone. The place is Medieval Switzerland 1307 AD to prevent the legend of Wilhelm Tell. My hero used a wormhole opened by an ancient alchemist to travel back to that era and naturally I had to go along too. It's a great place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there, permanently.
ReplyDeleteI don't think I'd want to take up residence there permanently either--I like my pants :)
DeleteNot too nerdy at all. You could have saved some people a lot of time :)
ReplyDeletelol, I would have saved myself a lot of time--there is definitely some selfish reasons for this! :)
DeleteHehe, cute Doctor bit. I'm sure it would be a fascinating discussion for you (not so much for me since I wouldn't understand a word, even if he was speaking English.)
ReplyDeleteI may have to learn some Bavarian if I ever manage to actually do this :)
DeleteI know you will have a great time!
ReplyDeleteThanks, I hope so!
