Okay, so, lately I have no interest in writing, crafting, or any of the general creative outlets I enjoy. It's summer break and normally I let myself indulge in these things freely, as I actually have time for them. This summer, thus far, nada. I wrote a chapter on something new, and bleh. Just wasn't feeling it. I've perused Pinterest for something fun to work on and absolutely nothing looked interesting. Trust me, that's a bit of a shocker for me ;) It would seem that any kind of creative muse I might ever have befriended has totally jumped ship.

Anyhow, yeah, if I seem off or upset online, I do apologize. Lots going on around here and I'm pretty much a giant basket-case. My normal means of staying "normal" (or as normal as I can get) aren't working, and I need to work on dragging back my Muse--which may involve some kicking and screaming :)
What about you? What drives off your muse?
Maybe something you can do... when you can, sit quietly and be still and focus on your breathing. Just notice your breath. Maybe count to 4 or 5 on the inhale and 5 or 6 or exhale. The longer the exhale the better because it's the exhale that calms and stills the mind. If you can only can only do it for a minute or two, that's fine. Or try it as you go to sleep. The object is simply to still your mind and allow space for the muse to reenter.
ReplyDeleteMost of all, don't sweat it. We all have our ebbs and flows, our peaks and valleys. Your muse will come back to you.
Been there, Meradeth! I find sometimes my creative well has just dried up and I need to give it the time and space it needs to refill. Hopefully you get your Muse back soon! In the meantime, try not to beat yourself up over it. I bet just enjoying life while not writing will do wonders for your Muse. :) Hugs!
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting how our desire to write tends to flee whenever life gets chaotic! Sandra Brown once was asked how she writes every day. She said, "Plumbers don't take the day off because the cat died." I think of that whenever I want to put off writing. However, right now freelance writing pays the bills mostly...so I put off fiction writing but I always do my work writing. I think it's easier to put writing off when it isn't bringing in the money we need to survive.
ReplyDeleteStress and being busy can be creativity killers. Give the muse time. She'll come back.
ReplyDeleteBeing busy and stress... not a fun combination.
ReplyDeletePeople think I'm a writing machine, but I actually get stuck sometimes with nothing to write about. I look through my old notes, because I've scribbled so many ideas throughout the years that I haven't acted on. I also try to take notice of what's around me, see if something sparks my imagination to write about.
ReplyDeleteI hope you have some down-time from all this stress. Your muse will return.
I have writing I need to do, but school just got out a couple days ago (yeah) and I am getting ready for a major vacation that starts in less than a week. I had originally thought I would spend a few hours every day writing this week, but I am so overwhelmed with everything else I have to do- that I am not writing. I know what I need to write- I just need some time. I think you are on to something with the stress. I like the advice people have given. :) Good luck getting your muse back and relaxing a bit more.
ReplyDeleteI definitely have a hard time writing in the summer. The more I force it the worse it gets, but I make sure to write every single day bc it usually sparks some thread I can work off :) but yes, when life gets hard it is hell to write lol
