My muse, you see, has decided that I am not worth her time. Maybe it's the stress of the last few months scaring her (or him...but I have always felt like my muse is female), or the fact that I've been
Funky writing prompt fun from Pinterest. |
So, what to do to lure that muse back? Well, a few things that tend to work for me are:
- Read good books :) Not that I'm looking for ideas, but books that remind me why I love books always sparks my desire to write something awesome.
- Take long walks and just get into the moment. A run works too. Letting my imagination run while doing so really helps.
- A fun movie or TV, which again sparks the story part of my brain.
- Pinterest. I know, kinda random, right? but there are all kinds of fun writing prompts collected there, along with other creative-oriented fun that I enjoy perusing.
There are other things, too, but these are my top ones. What about you? What do you do to get your muse to come out and play?
The writing prompt about fast-forwarding the kids is disturbing! Could you imagine skipping those bonding years (tho hard) and suddenly you have a smart-mouthed kid in your house who thinks you're totally dumb? Lol! Glad you're getting back into your writing swing!
ReplyDeleteI think muses like to stick out a toes, then a foot, then a leg. It's rare they appear all at once and you have to keep luring them out into the open for a time before they wrap their arms around you. Write a little each day and prime the pump, eh?
ReplyDeleteThe parents wanted to suffer through the teenage years of their kids EARLY? Wow.
ReplyDeleteRead favorite passages of books that sparked you into dreaming of being a writer works for me. :-)
I find music helps.
ReplyDeleteAwesome tips for helping your muse get back into action. Reading and watching good shows helps me too. Or I clean. My house is the cleanest when I'm brainstorming for ideas!
ReplyDeleteIt's super hard for me to find inspiration so I just write and hope it comes to me! lol! and good luck on sub!! It is NOT a fun experience whatsoever.
ReplyDeleteI like music and long walks. Summer vacation is coming soon for me. I usually write a draft or two, but I might find myself revising a manuscript that's just been beta read.
ReplyDeleteReading does always seem to help me. I get so inspired...and I read on the treadmill, so it's a combination of exercise and reading at the same time, I think!
ReplyDeleteAll these tips work for me as well! But I must add playing with the dogs or anything that can calm your mind.
ReplyDeleteI'm an adjunct college professor and my semester this spring kept me jumping. I think teachers need some time off to chill and regroup. Though, I'm happy to say, my muse has graced me with the return of her presence and I'm writing again. But one thing I do in the summer is to attend a week or week-and-a-half long writing retreat without fail. It works like magic!
ReplyDeleteAll these tips are great. You need to refill your creative well for it to start flowing smoothly again.
ReplyDeleteSounds like you have thought of good lures. I hope she comes back soon. Maybe you can coax her soon! Good luck! Enjoy your time away from the classroom (I know you are still working, but hopefully you feel a little more relaxed). :)
