So, in a potential spurt of madness (or genius, but I'm leaning toward the former), I signed up to be a participating author at the local comic book/novel festival. I've attended for several years now and always had a great time, and decided that maybe I should step out of my comfort zone a little and join in as, well, ya know, an author :) I do have some fun books to share, and I know I should be doing some more promo, so this is what happened.
And wow, this is going to take some serious stepping out of my comfort zone... In looking over my schedule, I'll be talking about indie publishing, dialogue (gulp!), YA books, stories in general, and my personal favorite EUGENICS! Okay, maybe I shouldn't be as excited about that as I am :) Anyhow, this is going to be interesting as I totally don't see myself as having anything terribly great to share on most of these things (with, oddly enough, the exception of being able to talk about the science of making a better "race"--good grief, what does that say about me??). Anyhow, it's going to be super fun, though I'm already rather nervous about it.
Anyone have any good advice for these kinds of things? Done one yourself? Managed to not be super nervous? :)
I've heard these things lead to LOTS of book sales. I'm looking into school carnivals and craft fairs for the fall. A friend of mine did a few of those and found some sell a lot of books. Some don't...and you end up just sitting there. But the type of festivals you're talking about usually have a LOT of people.
ReplyDeleteYay for trying new things!! I think it sounds fun...until I imagine having to be the actual one to speak, then (gulp). ;) Make sure to get some pics, I'd love to see them!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! I'm sure your excitement will shine through. Good luck. :)
ReplyDeleteGood for you! It sounds like it'll be quite a time for you.
ReplyDeleteWonderful. I've spoken at two conferences and I'll be participating in my first festival this summer. It's hard to step out of our comfort zones, but well worth the experience.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's great! Looking forward to hearing more about this experience.
ReplyDeleteStepping out of your comfort zone is great. And anytime you get to interact with readers is worth a little (or a lot, depending) of discomfort. When I signed my debut YA novel at Book Expo American in NYC I was a bundle of nerves. I was afraid someone would touch me and I'd snap like a rubber band. But I had a great time. The readers and bloggers were just as happy to meet me as I was them!
ReplyDeleteI won't tell you not to be nervous, because, let's face it, that's not something we can just turn off. But I will say that I think you are going to have a great time and I can't wait to hear about your experience!
Michelle :)
