I just finished my first major pass through on my revisions. I rewrote three chapters, added 5,000 words, and then cut about as many. I fixed several major plot points, added a nasty murder, and gave some more motivations to one of the characters. My brain hurts. Now, it's on to the hard part. I worked hard on fleshing out my characters more this round, but I know now I really have to do it. I've been trying to brainstorm good ways to make them leap off the page more, but I'm kinda at a loss. I've looked through blogs, BB threads, etc. I know these people really well, but I honestly don't think that's showing up on the page.
Does anyone have any good ideas for making sure your characters are well fleshed out throughout the story? I'd love to hear them!

Give them little physical mannerisms, especially if they're not very vocal. e.g. an old man who takes off his cap and rubs his bald head while thinking
