I love books from all over the place, especially when they talk about food :) Living in Montana has left me seriously in need of some good international treats (which I'm not ashamed to admit I scarfed down like crazy when I visited home). There are a lot of books that make me think of food, but one of my personal favorites is:
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafron.
Barcelona, 1945: A city slowly heals in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, and Daniel, an antiquarian book dealer’s son who mourns the loss of his mother, finds solace in a mysterious book entitled The Shadow of the Wind, by one Julián Carax. But when he sets out to find the author’s other works, he makes a shocking discovery: someone has been systematically destroying every copy of every book Carax has written. In fact, Daniel may have the last of Carax’s books in existence. Soon Daniel’s seemingly innocent quest opens a door into one of Barcelona’s darkest secrets--an epic story of murder, madness, and doomed love. (Goodreads)
After living in Barcelona for a while, there were several foods (okay, lots) that I still find myself craving. The top one? Hot chocolate. I love, love hot chocolate, and the best I've ever had is in Spain. Especially with churros. I've been on a hunt to find a good recipe ever since I returned, but nothing has been quite right. The closest I've come is from Foodie with Family. But while the chocolate has that awesome thick consistency, it's not quite *it*. The hunt goes on!

Chocolate and churros! I may have to try out the recipe you linked to just to try it out. I've heard of this combo and that the chocolate is thick and unique.
ReplyDeleteThe book is new for me, but I love the intrigue! Thanks for introducing it to me!
It's an awesome read, and recipe! Definitely worth checking out :)
DeleteOoooo, hot chocolate. A favorite in winter for sure.
ReplyDeleteOr anytime...lol! I may be guilty of enjoying this year round.
DeleteThis is intriguing...I wonder what makes it so different? I'd be down with chocolate ANYTHING.

I think I finally found the answer--rice flour! I've been using cornstarch for the thickening agent, when I really need rice flour. Go figure!
DeleteUnfortunately I don't eat chocolate, so I wouldn't even know where to look for a good recipe.
ReplyDeleteHi, Meradeth,
ReplyDeleteHaven't read the book you mentioned. Hot chocolate is good any time.
Shadow of the Wind sounds so fascinating! What a unique premise. I'd love to read this, thanks for the info. I adore chocolate, but I'm not as picky as you about the perfect one - I'll take anything as long as there's chocolate in it! Thanks for participating in the blogfest! :)
ReplyDeleteI love this book. And chocolate.... Although I'm not usually big on drinking hot chocolate. I had an amazing chili hot chocolate once, and that was almost enough to make me change my mind.
ReplyDeleteOh, yes, thick and creamy hot chocolate! I just ate some Raisinettes... my guilty afternoon snack before writing.
ReplyDeleteSpain has some darned remarkable chocolate. I have my niece send me some once in a while. Come over and you can test it out in some of your hot chocolate. Great book, too!
ReplyDeleteI've had churros with thin chocolate and it was no good. The thick stuff in that cup looks delicious.
ReplyDeleteI always get instant hot chocolate for at home, but it's always a treat to go to a restaurant and have it made from scratch. So much better.
ReplyDeleteHot chocolate is yummy! This bloghop is making me hungry. :)
ReplyDeleteI must not be reading the kind of books that would make me think of food!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea for a blogfest! So fun. All I can think of for books that remind me of food is Like Water for Chocolate :)
ReplyDeleteHave you tried Stephens hot cocoa? There are a TON of flavors, but overall, that's my favorite. We made hot chocolate an art while living in Utah. =)
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, how wonderful you go the chance to live in Barcelona. I got to spend five really eventful days and I will always remember that trip. And churros and hot chocolate, YES! :) I crave ice cream often - mostly gelato because it's just SO worth it. Haha
ReplyDeleteI read this one! I can understand why it makes you think of hot chocolate because of the location. :) Awesome that you spent time living there so you really know the food! Makes me want to visit and try the hot chocolate. :)
ReplyDeleteIm getting such great books for my reading list! THis one sounds right up my alley! I soooo want to know why someone is buying up all the books....
ReplyDeleteThat is hot chocolate in that pic?! It looks thick enough to be pudding! Lol! I haven't read that book, but the cover...like whoa. Pretty gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteOooh! That looks good!
