17- year- old Ana Maria Tei’s life has always been perfect: loving parents, good grades, and a future so bright it outshone the sun. But now words like “separation” and “divorce” are sending her world plummeting to hell. Determined to keep her family intact, Ana plans a family-bonding trip from Vienna to Tuscany. Except fate has other plans. Ana’s parents and siblings are killed in a car accident on their way to pick Ana up from school.
Enter Grim, aka Ernest. He promises to relinquish the four souls if Ana agrees to trade her soul for theirs and serve a lifetime as his novice. In order for Ana to graduate from her Reaper’s Novice station to a Soul Collector graduate, Grim puts her to test. To her horror, she finds out becoming a Reaper’s Novice didn’t happen by chance. It was preordained, and she is forced to make a choice: save her family’s souls or come to terms with who she really is and complete the task set for her. (Goodreads)
I've been looking forward to picking this book up for ages for several reasons. Number one: doesn't that blurb sounds amazing? Number two: holy moley, what a beautiful cover. And number three: Cecilia is an amazing person who I've loved getting to know on the web :) Seriously, go check out her blog--it's awesome!
That being said, Reaper's Novice didn't disappoint. I really loved getting into the creative and complex world Ana lives in, and all of the crazy curve-balls she has to handle as her world tips upside down. Added bonus: Vienna. I haven't been there before, but I loved the detail and insider tidbits that we catch throughout the story. Add in some great characters (I loved Zig!), and some incredibly high stakes (the souls of her awesome family? Eeep!), and this kept me reading way into the night!
Have you checked this one out? How about any other books about soul collectors/grim reapers?
Your friendly book-pusher,

DeleteDoggone it. You aren't gonna be happy until I spend every last penny left on my Amazon gift card, are ya? (sigh)
ReplyDeleteOkay, I went to Amazon, and saw that there were a bunch of reviews for this book there, and thought, "Okay, I might put this one on my TBR list." Kinda nebulous, you know? Then I made the fatal mistake of taking a "peek inside" and started reading. Curses, woman! You made me buy another one!!!
Just call me a book pusher, lol! I hope you enjoy this one!! :)
DeleteThat sounds like a showstopper of a book, from the premise!
ReplyDeleteDoesn't it? :)
DeleteI have never heard of this one! I do love the premise; it sounds very good and I haven't read any reaper stories, I don't believe. LOVE the cover. So pretty.
