Bonus Scene: On the witness stand – Rob vs. Donnie
In my newest novel, Death of a Waterfall, Teghan Jacobs is dating a man named Donnie Marks, and it's no secret that Robert Jacobs (Teghan's father) doesn't like Donnie. Why? Well, because Rob has a feeling that Donnie is a pawn sent to fuck with Rob's life and his daughter's; that Donnie is a method of revenge employed by a scorned ex-mistress. Needless to say, Rob is paranoid and goes out of his way to find out all he can about Donnie, but Donnie is reluctant to open up to Rob.
It was a lot of fun writing the interactions between Donnie and Rob, and I'd always thought it would be fun (and revealing) if Rob put Donnie on the witness stand. Unfortunately, there was no place in the book to actually do that. So, I've written a bonus scene exclusively for Meradeth's Write Stuff blog!
Chapter Eight Excerpt:
Rob shoved his hands in his pockets and fumed about Donnie's vagueness. This kid was hiding something. But what? And why? He was going to make it a point to find out first thing tomorrow. "What're you studying at CIT?"
"I haven't made up my mind yet, but I'm leaning toward computer animation."
"What kinds of jobs are available with that type of degree?"
Donnie shrugged. "I don't know. I could do animation for movies or television."
So that was the real reason he'd come to California. Why hadn't he just said so? "Hayden Falls is no Hollywood, boy." He wondered if Teghan knew Donnie's real intentions for being here. He'd raised her to be smart enough to know better than to get involved with a man who wanted to draw cartoons for a living. His daughter deserved to marry a lawyer or a doctor. Hell, even a politician would be an improvement over Donnie.
"I know that. I'm also considering computer programming or networking."
Rob nodded. "What about your parents? What do they do?"
"My mother is an ER nurse."
Now that was the most respectable thing about this kid. "That's not an easy job. What hospital does she work at?"
"She recently switched hospitals so that she could be closer to home," Donnie said.
Rob was getting increasingly annoyed with Donnie's answers, or lack thereof. He normally didn't have trouble getting answers from people. In fact, he was known for his hard ass, take-no-prisoners approach when questioning witnesses in the courtroom.
Bonus Scene:
If only Rob could get Donnie on the witness stand—he wouldn't get away with being so evasive then. Rob smiled and imagined what his day in court would be like…
Rob straightened his jacket and smoothed his tie down the front of his shirt. He approached the witness stand. The courtroom was silent, the judge and jury in awe of his presence, the spectators waiting with bated breath to see Rob's performance. "Please state your full name for the record."
"Donnie Jameson Marks." His voice was tight and controlled.
"Donnie…is that short for Donald?"
"No."
Rob nodded and rested his elbow on the corner of the witness box. "Where are you from, Mr. Marks?"
Donnie rolled his eyes. "I told you already, Pennsylvania."
Somebody snickered and Rob glared around the courtroom. "Where exactly in Pennsylvania?" Rob studied his fingernails as if bored with Donnie's answers. "Never mind. Strike the question from the record." Rob could find out those answers easily. "Are you dating my daughter?"
"Yes." Donnie smiled with satisfaction.
Rob wanted to slap the smug expression from Donnie's face. Rob straightened and glared at Donnie. "Did your mother coerce you to come to California? To find me and date my daughter? Don't forget, you're under oath."
"And don't forget that you're psychotic," Donnie said with a dirty look. "Why the hell would my mother have anything to do with me dating Teghan? My mother doesn't know anything about Teghan."
"Does your mother know me?" Rob clasped his hands behind his back and paced in front of the jury box.
Donnie shrugged. "I don't know. Does she?"
Rob stormed up to the witness stand and slammed his palms on it, his face inches from Donnie. "Do not get snotty with me, boy! Answer the damn question. What is your mother up to?"
"I have no idea what my mother is up to, but I can tell you what I'm up to." Donnie stood. "I'm getting the hell out of here. You're crazy!"
Rob stood, stunned, unable to comprehend how Donnie had gotten the best of him. Or, maybe it was simple: maybe Donnie was telling the truth. Rob laughed. Yeah, right. That kid didn't have an honest bone in his body.
