I just finished my major pass-through of revisions for the third Sary book. Yay! I have to admit I kind of love this book :) Big problem though? I have NO idea what to title it. Normally I get to this point and have a pretty good idea. This time, well, not so much... So, I thought I'd see if I could maybe get some help?
Here's a little (very, very rough so please don't judge) blurb to give you an idea what's happening:
Gabby knew it was going to be a crappy day the instant she saw the gun in Chad's backpack. While trying to stop Chad from doing the unthinkable, Gabby ends up wounded, and accidentally shows a classroom full of students her Sary wings. She knows what this means: she'll be made mortal and lose her position in the Sary.
When Jassen, heir to the leadership of the Sary, shows up on her doorstep, he offers her another option. She can remain with the Sary if she'll make amends with the classmates she exposed the truth to. It's a risky course, but Gabby's willing to try anything if it means she'll keep her wings. It soon becomes clear that Jassen has other plans for her, especially when Gabby starts to sense those around her who need the Sary's help.
To complicate matters, her best friend is falling love with one of the Sary brought in to help, and Jassen is tying Gabby's heart in knots. Things spiral out of control when Jassen's twin arrives, bent on using Gabby's mistake for his own ends: proving to the world that the Sary aren't just servants of suicidal mortals. Gabby will have to decide where her heart lies, and what rules need to be broken, if she can find a way to save herself and the Sary.
Ugh. This needs some work, but it gives an idea of what's up. So, here's my title ideas so far, and I'm totally up for new ones! To make this a little more fun, I'll select a random comment on Monday for some bookmarks :)
- Wings Over Will (old title for a previous incarnation of this book--not so sure it works any more)
- Chasing the Wind (several other books with this title, though no YA's)
- Counting the Stars (same as the previous)
- Into the Blue (kinda generic, but might work--and fits with the last line in the book)
I'd love to hear your thoughts! Oh, and if you've read the first two books and might be up for some beta reading, lmk??
Sounds like another good one, Meradeth!
ReplyDeleteHow about Wings into the Blue, Wings into the Wind?
Awesome ideas!! So hard to pick! :)
DeleteFrom the ones you've listed, I like "Into the Blue." Then again, I'm a big fan of taking something from the ending and using it as a title.
ReplyDeleteWhat about: "Saving the Sary?" Or "Sary Salvation?" Based on your synopsis, that seems to be the big theme/plot of the book.
Good luck!
That is a big theme of the book. Hmm. Awesome ideas!
DeleteWhat a treat this post is, Meradeth! For the title, I think I'd like something with 'Exposed' or 'Exposure' in it - it's a word that's sexy, mysterious and dangerous all at the same time :-)
ReplyDeleteOohh, I like! Thinking about how to work that in :)
DeleteBoy, you sure are fast! Your second book is still waiting its turn in line on my Kindle, and you've already churned out a third one! I am duly impressed.
ReplyDeleteI've been mulling over a potential title for your next book for the past ten minutes. I'm usually good at that sort of thing, but what I've come up with so far is pretty lame. I'll have to give it some more thought. If I come up with something scathingly brilliant, (hey! it could happen!) I'll let ya know.
I have no doubt you can come up with something! :) Definitely let me know if something comes to mind!
DeleteThis sounds fascinating! I was thinking: Exposed. Or What Lies Below. Undercurrents. I will keep thinking. :)

Thanks! Great suggestions!
DeleteHmm. I like exposed, too. Risk of Exposure. Just a thought. I'm lame with titles. Can you tell?
ReplyDeleteNo you're not! Thanks for the help!!
DeleteHow about Chase the Wind? Are there any books with that one? :D I know it's hard!! THE BINDING STONE was really difficult to title also.
ReplyDeleteI love The Binding Stone as a title. Hmm, going to Amazon to check about Chase the Wind! :)
DeleteI like INTO THE BLUE.
ReplyDeleteOther ideas: BROKEN WINGS, WHERE THE HEART LIES, MORTAL WINGS, CLIPPED
SARY-CIDE (okay...it's late, and I'm punchy). ;)
I was leaning more and more toward Into the Blue until I went to Target yesterday and they had big signs with this on it, for little girls clothes. Erm, kinda killed it for me, lol! Love the other ideas!
DeleteAwwww...bummer!!
DeleteI kept thinking of wings:
ReplyDeleteThe Unfolding
Wings Revealed
The Beating of Her Wings
OH! Lovely!! Thanks so much!
DeleteWow, the blurb sounds great. :) Lots of conflict in there. :)
ReplyDeleteHmm, titles.. Into the Blue sounds cool. Or something with the word 'Revealed' in it. :) oh gosh, I just hit a night shift at work, my mind is sorta muddy..lol I will drop by later once I get some decent amount of shut-eye. :)
Hope you get some rest! And I'm glad you liked the blurb (definitely lots of conflict!). Going to play with "revealed"!
DeleteLove all the suggestions of title above. I do hope you choose a catchy one.
ReplyDeleteAll the best!
Thanks! Definitely working on it :)
DeleteI so wish I could help, Meradeth. But you may not want me to. I'm horrible with titles and I struggle every time I have to come up with one. Good luck. That's the best I can do. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by! I know titles are tough! :)
DeleteHmm, on a whim all I can think of is Mortal Wings or Saving Sary. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Great suggestions :)
DeleteHow about Clipped Wings; Hidden Feathers; Wings; Wings Revealed; Lost Wings or Final Wings?
ReplyDelete(I was going to suggest Buffalo Wings, but don't know if you have a scene set in upper state New York :)~
I also wanted to say thanks very much for stopping by and commenting on my recent D-Day post. (I'm still working through all the comments!)
CSM Ryan's story has received an incredible amount of support and a HUGE *Thank you* goes to DL Hammons - and all the Blitzers :)
PS: Bill said to let everyone know he really appreciated all the personal comments directed his way :)
Love your suggestions!! And thanks so much for the awesome posts about D-Day--I learned a lot and really enjoyed them!
DeleteThis sounds really cool and interesting!

That sounds like a really interesting story! I like the "Into the Blue" title. There's a song called "Shades of Ruinous Blue" but maybe that's too over-the-top.
ReplyDeleteHave you played with the random title generators on the web? :-)
I haven't played with the name generators--I'll have to check that out :) And the song too, very curious now!
DeleteChasing the Wind is one that my partner in crime Norma wrote....
ReplyDeleteMaybe something different? Sky Dancer?
Thanks, William :) I ended up with Surrender the Sky!
